About Us
Let BizNix be your Safe Harbor
Founded in 1999, BizNix is a non-profit support group for computer users and business professionals, such as non-IT managers and business owners. Our mission is to help you use your computer safely, efficiently and economically. We hold periodic events with lectures and demonstrations that bring you up-to-date on products, technologies, and techniques. We strive to keep it simple and easy to grasp. When that's not possible because the subject is technical, we try to be gentle.
Lectures are often conducted by experts in their field - most have decades of experience. Some are authors. Many have worked with multiple types of computer systems and software. Most lectures are focused on the computer user experience and the impact on a company's business.
If your only involvement with computers is your home computer, you'll benefit greatly from many BizNix presentations but sometimes the business-oriented discussions may not interest you.
Technically-oriented computer users and IT-oriented managers are welcome to attend our events but may be disappointed in the technical depth of our presentations and discussions. However, our presenters are typically able to discuss the technical details of a topic in great depth and are available to you afterwards.
Our Name
The name BizNix is a conjunction of Business and UNIX. Business professionals don't have the plethora of computer support groups that IT professionals do. If you're a non-technical manager or business owner, how do you get non-biased information and advice? This is where BizNix comes in.
UNIX (pronounced "you nicks") is a cutting-edge technology that provides significantly greater security than the computer system you're probably using now and at lower cost. Apple Macintosh and Linux are examples of computer technologies that are based on UNIX directly. Windows was not originally designed around UNIX but each new Windows version includes a few more UNIX-like features.
